One reason Ireland is supposedly known as the Emerald Isle is because it’s so full of green, lush grass and flowers. However, that doesn’t happen without a little rain. And because Ireland is an island, the climate doesn’t differ too much with lots of heat in summer and then cold, rainy spells in winter. When it rains, it tends to rain evenly.
But there’s no point heading to Ireland and then hiding in your room, even if it’s in one of the hotels near Merrion Square Dublin. There’s so much to see and do that missing out would be criminal!
Dublin Writers Museum
Some of the best loved writers in the world came from Dublin; James Joyce, the novelist, the poet and playwright Oscar Wilde, and satirist Jonathan Swift all made their homes here. Now, you can discover their lives and how Dublin shaped them while their writing shaped the world.
You’ll find letters from writers, first editions of their works, biographies and more in this converted 18th-century house. If you’re a fan of literature, head here first.
National Gallery of Ireland
Not far from many hotels in the O’Callaghan hotel group, the National Gallery of Ireland has so much to offer. Find highlights from Irish painters like Daniel Maclise or enjoy the work of Vermeer, Caravaggio, Picasso and more.
Established in 1854, the museum has plenty to see and do. The exhibitions and tours change often, but there’s bound to be something on when you come here. Best of all, it’s so big that after you’ve explored everything here it might be dry again.
Get wetter
There are two kinds of people; ones who will try and avoid the rain and the wet, and the other who will shrug and see it as an excuse. This is definitely an activity for the ‘excuse’ type.
Wakedock is Ireland’s first cable wakeboard park, based in the Grand Canal Dock in Dublin. Perfect for beginners, strap on a wakeboard and be prepared to ride the course!
You’ll be taken by boat to the starting block, and then given a handle. This is the handle that will pull you around the wakeboarding course. Because it’s connected by cables, there’s no need to start again if you happen to let go. Instead, the operator will send the handle back to you so you can be on your way.

Head to Stephen’s Green shopping centre and use the rain as an excuse to stock up on souvenirs for when you’re back.
